How to Download and Install WhatsApp on PC

Using WhatsApp on your computer means typing with a real keyboard, dragging in files, and not grabbing your phone every few minutes. Installing it on a Windows PC takes a couple of minutes, and the step that trips most people up is linking it to your phone. Here’s the whole process — download, link, and fix the problems that actually come up.

How WhatsApp on PC works

WhatsApp Desktop is a companion to your phone’s account, not a separate login. Your phone number lives on the phone; the PC app mirrors those chats after you link the two with a QR code. That’s why there’s no “sign up on PC” — you always start from the phone. Modern WhatsApp lets linked devices keep working for several days even when the phone is off, but the phone remains the master account.

Download WhatsApp for Windows

Use one of the two official sources only:

  • The Microsoft Store — search “WhatsApp”, or open the listing from whatsapp.com/download. The Store version updates itself, which is the main reason to prefer it.
  • whatsapp.com/download directly, which gives you the same installer.

Skip third-party download portals — messaging apps are a favourite malware disguise. One honest note: the current Windows app is a web-based wrapper rather than a lightweight native app, so it can use more memory than you’d expect. That’s normal for now, not a sign of a bad install.

Link it to your phone (step by step)

  1. Install and open WhatsApp on the PC. It shows a QR code.
  2. On your phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings → Linked devices (on Android it’s the three-dot menu → Linked devices; on iPhone it’s the Settings tab).
  3. Tap Link a device. Unlock with your fingerprint or PIN if asked.
  4. Point the phone’s camera at the QR code on the PC screen.
  5. Wait a few seconds while your chats sync. That’s it — the PC is now linked.

Set it up so it’s actually useful

  • Notifications: the first time, allow WhatsApp to show Windows notifications, or you won’t know when messages arrive. You can fine-tune them in the app’s Settings → Notifications.
  • Start with Windows: in the app settings you can have WhatsApp launch at startup and sit in the system tray, so it’s always ready.
  • Files: you can drag photos and documents straight into a chat, or press the attach button — far easier than on a phone.

Troubleshooting

  1. QR code won’t scan. Turn up screen brightness, clean the phone camera, and make sure the whole code is visible (not cut off by a small window). If it greyed out, click it to refresh.
  2. “Link a device” is missing on the phone. Update WhatsApp on the phone — older versions hide or move the option.
  3. Chats won’t sync / stuck on “Connecting…”. Check the PC’s internet first, then make sure the phone has a connection at least once so the initial sync can complete.
  4. No desktop notifications. Three switches must all be on: the app’s own notification setting, Windows Settings → System → Notifications (WhatsApp allowed), and Focus/Do Not Disturb turned off.
  5. High memory use. Expected with the current web-wrapper app. Closing and reopening it, or signing out of linked devices you no longer use (from the phone’s Linked devices screen), helps a little.
  6. It logged itself out. If the phone hasn’t been online for a couple of weeks, the linked PC is logged out for security. Just re-scan the QR code.

WhatsApp in the browser (no install)

Don’t want to install anything? web.whatsapp.com gives the same chat in a browser tab, linked with the same QR method. It’s ideal on a shared or work PC where you can’t install apps — you only lose the tray icon and native notifications.
