AppInstall.info is an independent site about one practical subject: installing, updating, and troubleshooting software on Windows PCs — with occasional side trips to macOS and Linux where it helps. If a download page confuses you, a scan button does nothing, or a driver update went sideways, our guides are written to get you out of exactly that situation.
How we work
- Official sources only. Every download link on this site points to the software vendor or project itself — never to third-party download portals, mirrors, or “cracked” copies. Where a look-alike site is a known danger (UniKey and WinRAR are notorious examples), we say so explicitly.
- Facts are checked, and dated. Guides carry a “Last checked” line with the version that was current at the time. When software dies, we say it plainly — our guides on the retired Messenger desktop app, HP ePrint, and the old Microsoft Remote Desktop app exist to stop you from chasing downloads that no longer exist.
- Honest about alternatives. If the built-in Windows feature makes a program unnecessary for you, the article says so before anything else.
- Licensed images, credited. Screenshots are used only where the software’s license permits them (open-source programs like 7-Zip and Blender); everything else uses licensed photography from Wikimedia Commons, credited under each image.
Corrections
Software changes fast, and a guide can go stale despite the dates on it. If you find a dead link, an outdated version number, or a step that no longer matches the screen in front of you, tell us at the contact page — corrections are the fastest way to make these guides better for the next person.
The archive
In September 2026 this site was rebuilt from the ground up: the old archive was removed or rewritten article by article, under the editorial rules above. What remains is deliberately small — a couple dozen guides we can actually stand behind — and it grows only as fast as we can verify things properly.
