If the Scan button on your Epson printer does nothing when you press it, the missing piece is usually a small utility called Epson Event Manager. This guide explains what it actually does, whether your model still needs it, where to download it safely, and how to fix the most common scan-to-PC problems on Windows.

What Epson Event Manager actually does
Epson Event Manager does not scan anything by itself. It is a button listener: it runs in the background, waits for you to press a hardware button on the printer or scanner, and then triggers the action you assigned to that button — scan to PDF, scan to email, scan to a folder, or open a specific application. The actual scanning is handed off to Epson Scan 2, which must also be installed.
That is why a machine can print and even scan perfectly from the computer while the physical Scan button stays dead: printing uses the driver, scanning from the PC uses Epson Scan 2, but the button needs Event Manager.
Does your model still need it?
Epson has been replacing Event Manager with Epson ScanSmart on newer models. The rule of thumb:
- Older models (many EcoTank ET, WorkForce WF, Expression XP, and L series machines released up to roughly 2019) list Event Manager on their driver page and need it for button scanning.
- Newer models list ScanSmart instead. If your model’s support page offers ScanSmart, use that — Event Manager will not add anything.
The authoritative answer is always your model’s own page: go to epson.com/support, search for your exact model (for example ET-3760 or WF-2850), and check which utilities are listed under Drivers & Downloads.
Download it from Epson only
Search results for “Epson Event Manager download” are full of look-alike third-party sites. Some bundle adware; none of them are faster than Epson’s own server. Use only these sources:
- Your model’s page at epson.com/support (recommended — it always gives the right package for your machine), or
- the direct Windows package from Epson’s server: EEM_31153.exe (Event Manager 3.11.53), which works on Windows 7 through Windows 11.
On a Mac, Epson still hosts an older Event Manager package, but on current macOS versions Epson steers scanning to ScanSmart and Image Capture instead — check your model’s macOS driver list before installing anything.
Install and set up scan-to-PC
- Install the full driver package for your model first (Drivers & Utilities Combo Package on US model pages). A bare print driver is not enough for button scanning.
- Run the Event Manager installer and accept the license. There are no settings worth changing during setup.
- Open Epson Event Manager from the Start menu. It also places an icon in the system tray.
- In the Button Settings tab, make sure your printer or scanner is selected in the drop-down at the top.
- Assign an action to each button you plan to use — for example, Scan to PDF into your Documents folder.
- Press the hardware Scan button once to test. The first run may trigger a Windows Firewall prompt — allow it, or network scanning will silently fail.
When the Scan button does nothing
Work through these in order — they cover almost every case we see:
- Event Manager is not running. Open it manually and test the button again. If that fixes it, keep it running: in Event Manager, enable the option to launch at startup, or add it to your Windows startup apps.
- The wrong device is selected. On the Button Settings tab, the drop-down must show your exact model. A machine reinstalled or moved to a new network often re-registers under a new entry.
- The firewall is blocking it. This is the classic cause on network-connected printers: everything works over USB but the button fails over Wi-Fi. Allow Event Manager (EEventManager) through Windows Defender Firewall, or temporarily disable the firewall once to confirm the diagnosis.
- Epson Scan 2 is missing or cannot see the scanner. Open Epson Scan 2 directly. If it cannot find the device either, fix that first — install it from your model’s driver page and add the scanner there. Event Manager cannot work without it.
- Fresh Windows 11 install. Windows Update installs a basic print driver automatically, which is why printing works out of the box while the scan button does not. Install Epson’s full package for your model and reboot.
If your model uses ScanSmart instead
On newer machines, install Epson ScanSmart from your model’s support page and set the scan destination inside ScanSmart. The hardware button then launches ScanSmart’s workflow directly — Event Manager is not involved and should not be installed alongside it.
Once the button is assigned and the firewall rule is in place, Event Manager is the kind of utility you never think about again — which is exactly what it is supposed to be.
